India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to the United States was a triumph, marked by a grand welcome and high honours. As Indians, we couldn't help but swell with pride. Yet, behind the scenes, a lesser-known figure from a quiet corner of India played a crucial role in the success of this historic visit.

The Unsung Hero of India

Hailing from the unassuming district of Aravalli in Gujarat, Ramesh Shah is a man of extraordinary influence, though his name remains largely unrecognized. Despite his global philanthropic endeavors, he prefers to work behind the scenes, shunning the limelight.

It was through his daughter, Sonal Shah, that the world caught a glimpse of the Shah family's remarkable journey. Sonal, a brilliant mind from a humble village, was appointed to the advisory board of former US President Barack Obama. This achievement not only brought immense pride to India but also put the tiny village on the world map.

The story of Ramesh Shah and his family is a testament to the power of quiet determination and the extraordinary potential that lies within the heartland of India.

Ramesh Shah, a name synonymous with philanthropy and global impact, embarked on his American journey over four and a half decades ago. Yet, his heart has always remained deeply rooted in his Indian heritage. Despite the vast distance, he remains tirelessly committed to India's progress and prosperity. His ancestral village, Gabat, a secluded hamlet in Aravalli district, erupted in joy when his daughter, Sonal Shah, was appointed to former US President Obama's advisory board.

The Dawn of this Noble Soul

Shah's early life was shaped by the simple pleasures of rural India. Growing up in Gabat, he experienced the warmth of family and the challenges of a small-town existence. His parents, Poonamchand and Manekba, ran a local grocery store, a modest business that served as the heart of the community. As a young boy, Shah attended the local government school, laying the foundation for his future academic pursuits.

After completing his secondary education in Kapadvanj, Shah pursued higher studies in engineering at MS University, Vadodara. His time at the university exposed him to new ideas and ignited a passion for social service. Inspired by the ideals of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and the teachings of Swami Vivekananda, he developed a strong sense of national pride and a desire to make a difference in the world.

Over the past four decades, he has dedicated himself to various philanthropic endeavors, focusing on healthcare, education, and community development. His unwavering commitment to these causes has earned him respect and admiration both in India and abroad.

A Life Dedicated to Service

Ramesh Shah, in 1978, founded the ‘Gujarati Society of Houston’, a platform for Indian immigrants to connect and support one another.

Beyond community building, Shah has been a tireless advocate for the rights of Indians abroad. He has spearheaded numerous political campaigns, both in India and the US, and has fought for the rights of immigrants. His unwavering commitment to justice led him to organize peaceful protests and hunger strikes, ultimately securing justice for thousands. Even today, Indian students and professionals seeking opportunities in the US often turn to him for guidance and support.

Shah's philanthropic endeavours extend far beyond the Indian diaspora. He established the ‘Ekal Vidyalaya’ movement, a revolutionary initiative aimed at empowering rural and tribal communities in India. These one-teacher schools provide quality education to millions of children, enabling them to break free from the cycle of poverty and ignorance.

As the global coordinator of ‘Ekal Vidyalaya’, Shah travels extensively to promote the movement's mission. He and his wife, Kokilaben, spend significant time visiting the schools, inspiring teachers and students alike. Through their tireless efforts, they are transforming lives and building a brighter future for India's rural communities.

Currently, the ‘Ekal Vidyalaya’ movement is a formidable force, comprising over 83,289 teachers, 6,000 volunteers, 35 regional organizations spanning 22 Indian states, and 8 support agencies. It operates in more than 83,289 schools, educating and empowering over 2 million children. Beyond meeting national education standards, ‘Ekal Vidyalaya’ is committed to holistic development, offering vocational training, healthcare education, and fostering a sense of community empowerment through ethics and value education.

Shah now serves as the global coordinator of the ‘Ekal Vidyalaya’ movement, propagating its mission worldwide, from Denmark to New Zealand. He and his wife, Kokilaben, dedicate several months each year to visiting ‘Ekal Vidyalaya’ schools in India. Regular health camps in Vatrak, Modasa, and Bhiloda ensure continued care and support for the local population.

The public hospital in Vatrak has emerged as a lifeline for the underprivileged. By providing affordable meals to patients and their attendants, the hospital fosters a compassionate and supportive environment.
